Ɛte sɛn?: A Sensory Ethnographic Exploration of Cape Coast, Ghana

Between the extraordinary and the traumatic, there is value in nothing, the middle ground, the mundane. When googling Cape Coast, the prominent representations lie in the slave castles and coastal imagery. My project, Ɛte sɛn?, is a creative research project based in Cape Coast, Ghana, that explores the sensory dimensions of Black embodiment, memory, and land. Through the use of photography and the five senses, this work investigates: How can an image hold space for the in-between, the mundane, furthermore, resisting the flattening visual tropes often associated with Africa?
